Laboratory

Our well-equipped diagnostic laboratory carries out a variety of tests for clients across Gloucestershire, the West Midlands and the rest of the UK.

Laboratory Services

The laboratory is certified by the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB)/British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) to test for the venereal disease Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), which is a major cause of reduced fertility and abortion in the breeding industry.

Haematology and biochemistry

We can analyse blood samples to help investigate ill health, or as part of performance assessments.

Bacteriology

Both aerobic and anaerobic culture may be performed from possible sites of infection, such as the nasopharyngeal region in possible Strangles cases, poorly-healing wounds and the cervico-endometrium of in-season mares.

Culture and sensitivity testing allow us to determine if antibiotics are needed and the most effective antibiotic choice for each horse, to help limit the development of resistance.

We can also run LAMP PCR tests for Strep equi bacteria and EHV and Flu viruses on nasal swabs and guttural pouch washes for results within an hour.

Parasitology and fungal assay

Faecal worm egg counts (dung sample) can be carried out as part of your horse’s routine health programme.

Fungal assay can confirm the presence of Ringworm in certain skin cases.

Cytology

We can assess joint, synovial and peritoneal fluids for signs of infection. Tracheal wash and endometrial samples can be assessed for inflammation and infection.
