Examinations and assessments
Our hospital has three well-appointed examination rooms, to allow assessments to be performed safely and in quiet surroundings. There are two sets of stocks, which are used to safely restrain patients for examination, standing surgical procedures and reproduction work.

Diagnostic imaging
Our hospital boasts a vast array of diagnostic imaging equipment. These include endoscopy, radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy (‘bone scan’), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Our MRI is the only machine in the country capable of imaging difficult-to-reach areas, such as the upper limbs (knees, hocks, stifles) and the head. As our MRIs are performed under general anaesthesia, we can obtain superior imaging quality by removing any artefact caused by the horse moving.

Operating theatre
Our surgery facility comprises a large, purpose-built operating room and a separate preparation room. Two adjoining padded and heated rooms permit the safe induction and recovery from general anaesthesia and there is an electronic winch to lift horses between rooms.
Once your horse has received its anaesthetic, it will be assisted to the ground using a padded support door. It will then be prepared for ongoing anaesthesia and lifted onto a specifically-designed, padded operating table. Once surgery is complete, recovery from anaesthesia is assisted using a specially designed rope system.
The theatre is fully-equipped for both elective and emergency surgery. Facilities available include intra-operative digital radiography, a full complement of ASIF equipment for fracture repair and state-of-the-art arthroscopy equipment, making it ideally placed for all orthopaedic surgery, such as examination and lavage of infected joints and tendon sheaths. Our soft tissue surgery caseload is extensive, and we routinely undertake procedures such as laser sarcoid removal, airway surgery, arthroscopy, colic surgery and caesarians.
Horses under general anaesthesia receive careful monitoring from a dedicated vet using some of the most advanced technologies available, including continuous measurement of blood pressure, ECG and inhaled and exhaled gases.
Some procedures can be performed under standing sedation and local anaesthesia, including ovariectomies and other reproductive surgeries, laparoscopy and airway surgery and ophthalmic surgery. These procedures are performed in stocks to allow safe patient restraint.
Our theatre is run by a team of highly trained and qualified surgical nurses. General anaesthesia is performed exclusively by veterinary surgeons.

Reproduction
During the reproduction season, we can provide a bespoke service for your mare and foal at the hospital. We have dedicated stables and paddocks for mares and foals, and housing them in the hospital allows intensive monitoring whenever required, day or night.

Measurements
We have an official measurer of the JMB (Joint Measurement Board) in our team. The JMB was established in 1934 to run a national scheme for the measurement of the height of horses and ponies for competition purposes.
Measurements have to be carried out on the certified measuring pad at our hospital, and typically take place on a Thursday or a Friday.

Surgeries
Our operating theatre is a large, purpose-built room containing a special operating table, which can be adapted to position the patient optimally for the surgical procedure underway.
Two adjoining padded rooms permit the safe induction and recovery from general anaesthesia.

Our soft tissue surgery caseload is extensive, and we routinely undertake wind surgery, castration, ovariectomy, colic surgery and laser sarcoid removal.
Horses under general anaesthesia receive careful monitoring from our qualified equine veterinary nurses, which includes continuous measurement of blood pressure, ECG and inhaled and exhaled gases. Where needed, breathing can be controlled artificially using a mechanical ventilator.
At the end of surgery, horses are moved to a padded box using an electrical hoist, where monitoring continues throughout the assisted recovery.
