Pre-purchase examinations 

Buying a horse is a huge commitment, and having a vetting done before you proceed is a common request. This can be useful in finding issues that may affect the suitability of a horse.

A routine vetting involves a five stage procedure that begins with identification of the horse and a thorough clinical examination. 

The horse will then be examined moving, including walking, reversing, circling, trotting and lunging. Flexion tests are usually performed. Then a ridden or strenuous exercise test is performed, followed by a rest period and then a final examination.

A blood sample is also taken and usually stored for six months (it can be tested immediately if required). 

This is for drug testing only, and any other type of test would need to be discussed so that we take the correct samples.

Further examinations are often conducted at the purchaser’s request, in addition to the process outlined above.  Additional requests that we commonly carry out include X-rays, ultrasound scanning and upper airway endoscopy.

It is worth noting that if you intend to insure the horse, then you should speak with the prospective insurance company prior to the vetting being carried out, as some companies will insist on pre-purchase x-rays, depending upon the level of insurance cover.

The findings of the vetting and any extra procedures should also be discussed with the insurance company as these findings may affect the insurance cover.

Vettings can either be performed at surgery, or we can travel throughout the UK and Europe.

We also carry out insurance vettings. These are somewhat similar to a standard vetting but the final certificate that is issued is different.
