Pre-purchase examinations, or vettings, are a thorough examination on behalf of a purchaser to identify any issues that could affect a horse’s suitability for its intended use.
A standard 5 stage clinical examination is performed and a blood sample is collected for storage (see link below). X-rays, scopes and ultrasound scans can be performed in addition to the clinical examination. It is worth noting that if you intend to insure the horse then you should speak with the prospective insurance company prior to the vetting being carried out, as some companies will insist on pre-purchase x-rays depending upon the amount being insured for.
In addition to our own clients, we are more than happy to carry out these examinations for people that may not be currently registered with us. Vettings can either be performed at surgery, or we can travel throughout the UK and Europe.
Insurance vettings can be carried out for existing owners, which follow the same format however do not include an opinion on suitability for intended use.
