Explanation of Qualifications

In order to practise as a veterinary surgeon in the United Kingdom, one must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS).

The qualifications listed below have been approved for inclusion for membership of the RCVS.

Veterinary Degrees

• BVSc – Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Liverpool / Bristol)
• BVetMed – Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (London)
• BVM&S – Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (Edinburgh)
• BVMS – Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (Glasgow)
• MVB – Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Dublin)

Post-Graduate Qualifications

• CertEO – Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics
• CertEP – Certificate in Equine Practice
• CertVA – Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia
• PhD – Doctor of Philosophy

Support Staff Qualifications

• EVN – Equine Veterinary Nurse (RCVS)
• RVN – Registered Veterinary Nurse 
• NVQ A1 – National Vocational Qualification (Assessor)
• HNC – Higher National Certificate
